The construction and mining industries face a dual challenge: driving global development while significantly reducing their environmental impact. As these sectors account for a substantial portion of global emissions, there’s a pressing need for innovative solutions. In a project funded by Norway Grants “Green ICT“-program, PowerUP Fuel Cells OÜ, Nordic Batteries AS and Beyonder AS are developing a combined fuel cell and high-power battery system, designed to offer a sustainable alternative to traditional energy sources without compromising on power or efficiency.
Construction and mining operations are notorious for their heavy carbon footprint, largely due to the use of heavy-duty machinery. Many of these operations have a unique energy profile with a constant low-level power with intermittent periods of high energy demand. The novel system being developed within the framework of the GreenICT project uniquely addresses these challenges by combining a proton exchange membrane fuel cell for continuous low-power needs (up to 10kW) with a high-power lithium-ion battery capable of providing high-power bursts (up to 100kW). This approach not only reduces emissions but also offers a more efficient and cost-effective solution than current alternatives. Designed for the rugged demands of construction and mining, it promises to transform operations by offering a seamless energy transition that doesn’t compromise on performance.
The feedback from the construction and mining sectors underscores the system’s potential to redefine industry standards. Companies have expressed enthusiasm for the system’s environmental benefits, operational efficiency, and the economic advantages it presents. There’s a clear recognition that adopting such technologies is not just environmentally responsible but also strategically advantageous.
The development of the combined fuel cell and high-power battery system marks a significant step forward in the electrification of construction and mining. By providing a practical solution to the unique challenges these industries face, it sets the stage for a more sustainable and efficient future. As we continue to seek ways to reduce our environmental footprint, innovations like this will play a crucial role in ensuring the continued growth of these essential sectors in harmony with the planet.
